So Kim designed this garden. I've been tending to it. I've been worried I won't know what to do because... well.. I don't know how to take care of plants really. BUT! One of the flowers is called a "cone flower." It looks like a small sunflower. I've figured out that the cone flower is really good at telling you how it's doing. For instance, it follows the sun through out the day. It actually bends from east to west as the sun rises and sets. So if it's doing that, I know that it needs sun... So I know to pray for sun...
Also, I noticed the petals were a little droopy today. So I went and watered all the plants. In only 1 hour, the petals were no longer droopy. How cool is that!? So I know when to water the plants. |

Am I the only one confused about the new "Nuvaring" birth control? I keep seeing it on TV, and I'm baffled. It looks like a ring. Too big for a finger, and too small to be a bracelet. And.. It's a once a month birth control thing. So... Girls have to put this ring thing up inside their vag? Here's my problem with this.
Why?
The pill has worked for a long ass time. But it is a daily thing, and some girls forget.. Fine.. The whore patch comes out. And.. I'm sorry, if you can't find a place to put that thing where people won't see it, then you arn't the kind of person to be embarrased by people seeing it. So they make a "whore patch" that goes in a place noone will likely ever see...
I just don't see the appeal of this thing. You just walk around for 30 days with this thing inside you? Does it disolve or what? What if it comes out somehow? Like... during vigorous activities. It seems like too much to worry about.
And what if you make the very mistake this new product trys to remedy? What if you forget? Afterall, if you get into a routine of taking a pill every single day, it seems to me you won't likely forget. But if you only do something once a month... You get my point. |

| Be a Tiger |
|
|
| 12:23am 17/02/2006 |
| |
At the 2006 kickoff last month for the company I work for, one of the slides was entitled "Be a Tiger" and that’s it. The President went on to explain that he wants us to be like Tiger Woods. Meaning when Tiger is playing everyone pretty much agrees that he is going to win, and so they shoot for second place.
I like that concept. I want to be so good at what I do, that my competitors don't even want to try to compete for 1st place. What a great concept.
Note: I said "want"... My goal is not yet a reality.
Also... since I started working there in May 2005, other employees have been bugging me to read "Good to Great"... Well we got a free audio book version, so I listened to it, and man was it good. What is cool about it is that it is not like any other "motivational" or business related book I've read before. This is because it is not full of opinions, but scientifically proven facts.
Check it out.. This book was compiled from a 5 year research project. The question was "Can an established and average company become a great company, and sustain that greatness?” It examined the stock market with very strict criteria over the last 100 years: The company had to have been average for at least 15 years. Then had to improve significantly, beating the market by at least 3 times compared to other businesses in the same market. And finally, sustain that improvement for at least 15 years. They found only 11 companies. They also defined 11 comparison companies.. These comparison companies did NOT become great, even though they were almost identical in everyway to the Good to Great companies at the time of their transition. Now, in comparing these 2 sets of companies, they extracted about 8 concepts that were universally true among all 11 Good to Great companies. And here is one that I really like...
The flywheel vs. the doom loop. Imagine a massive horizontal flywheel. The size of a small house in diameter, and 3 feet thick. This flywheel represents whatever you choose to apply the concept to; be it a company, your work, your life, a major goal, whatever. Now the idea is that you clearly understand your goal, and distinctly define your flywheel(different chapter). Once it's there, you start pushing. At first, it is really hard. You push and push and push with all your strength, and you only get a little movement. Slowly thought, it gets a tiny bit easier, then a tiny bit easier, and before you know it you've made a full revolution.. And so you keep pushing and pushing and pushing... The 2nd revolution comes a bit easier... And so you continue to push, in the same direction, with the same steady force, and the flywheel gives a little easier. Soon you've gone around 3, then 4, then 5 times! The flywheel feels lighter and lighter, and your energy starts to create real results even though it's becoming easier. And finally, if you keep on pushing, you will reach the "breaking point." The point at which the momentum gathered by the flywheel becomes the driving force. The flywheel is spinning on its own and you couldn't stop it if you wanted to. Now the challenge is not so much to spin the flywheel, but to hang on for the ride, and never stop pushing.
The previously mentioned doom loop, would be like trying to stop the flywheel after 5 revolutions and trying to go the other way. The idea is that if you don’t stay focused on the goal, and try to abandon your core values and change everything completely; then you will never reach your ultimate goal.
Basically... I love this concept. A lot. I love the idea of persistence paying off over time, as long as you stay focused. It's helpful when I'm feeling like I'm not making any progress or if I make a mistake. Because... Answer this... After the flywheel has its own momentum, and is spinning like a champ, what one push was THE defining push that got you to that point?.... The answer is that all the pushes helped equally. The combination of every little push over the years is what counted. One single push, or one single mistake, will not ultimately make or break your flywheel...... As long as you keep pushing.
Man that is really comforting. Stay focused, stay disciplined, never give up, and your flywheel will eventually spin on its own. I love it. |

| Windows Vista |

I checked out some screenshots and "new" features in Windows Vista. Thats the new workstation operating system to replace XP. It's so funny how Microsoft continues to follow Apple's lead on all things Windows.. I'm looking at the "new look and feel" of Vista and... It looks a LOT like OSX! There's all sorts of new window management with 3-d effects and such.. Pretty much like OSX's expose.. Oh and you can have "gadgets" which are small programs that can do any little thing... They are a copy of OSX's "widgets" (www.konfabulator.com)
Anyway. It looks neat. Not real original looking, but I suppose true creativity from Microsoft is too much to ask. At least internet explorer is finally getting tabs.
I have to wonder.. Why spend so much time on fancy 3-d effects and shiney new graphics for the interface? Most people will turn that crap off anyway to speed up the computer. Why not spend resources on hardening the operating system? I get so tired of cleaning up windows. Some of the blame goes to users for being bad users. But you can be the best user in the world and still screw up a windows machine. Unpatched, one wrong click will end its life, and I don't even have antivirus on my Mac cause.. Well... THERE ARE NO MAC VIRUSES(yet). I always think it's funny when that is news to people. |

So JJ is our new netflix friend, and it's pretty cool. You can see what they like, don't like, and what you may like etc... And I must say that JJ has excellent taste in movies.
For the most part.
Maybe I'm alone here, but these just jumped right out at me.

Ok so I don't feel like uploading screen caps.
Moulin Rouge and Rocky Horror get 1 star... Yet the entire collection of Buffy the Vampire Slayer gets 5 stars?!

Woo! I finally figured out a particularly tricky problem at work. Only took me about 8 hours today, but man is it satisfying.
So this customer had an oldass novell server. We installed a new windows server. If it helps, the difference between the two is something like the difference between an apple and a dell. So their main business-critical application is DOS based. We tested the program pretty well on a windows server in-shop and couldn't find any problems. Lucky us.. AFTER the install, the client tells us that there is one special report that will only run on this broke down old ass DOS 6.22 machine. (DOS 6.22 is older than old. Older than windows 95. Older than windows 3.1. DOS was the first operating system Microsoft stole err.. Bought It doesn’t have pretty graphics, only text. And you don’t use a mouse, just a keyboard). This is compounded by the fact that this one PC was running with a crapped out blank harddrive, and booting from a custom boot disk that was designed to connect to a novell server, not a windows server.
SO! I had the job of either creating a new bootdisk that would connect to a windows server, or just installing DOS on a different PC, and setting it up to connect to the windows server. I won't bore you with TOO many more details, but I did craft a wonderful bootdisk. It booted, auto-detected the network card and configured it, grabbed an IP address, and connected to the server.. AND IT WORKED! Only it didn't... Cause the extra-supercool application needed additional DOS files to work properly for the coveted report that only runs on DOS
SO! I had to find a copy of DOS and successfully install it on a PC from the local PC graveyard.. Then I had to find a way to get it to use tcp/ip(that means use an IP address.. You know.. an IP address, the social security number of the internet..). Yea, cause see.. Back then they didn't use IP addressing much. They used an oldass crappy technology called IPX. So I find this nifty upgrade for DOS that allows it to use tcp/ip and yea.. It worked
But wait.. There's more...
You know how when you add something to a newer PC, windows will detect it and say "Hey! Cool digital camera!! Let me just install that immediately without you having to do anything at all!!". Yea well... In the early 1980's, they didn't do that. So I had to scour the internet for the network card's drivers, then figure out how to install them... And yea, it finally worked.
And then... I successfully mapped a drive from the DOS box, to my laptop running XP... And I looked over the mapping, and I saw that it was good. And I said let this be called old-school drive mapping, and it was so (that means I can share files between the two boxes).
Then I gave Kim the superduper short version of all this.. She was totally not impressed. Ah well. ;) |

I'm paranoid that I'm going to lose my job. Can't say why, I work diligently (when there is work to be done), and I make sure my customers are happy. I'm just afraid of being fired, or losing it for whatever reason.
I guess it's that I have a good thing going, and I'm just anticipating its end. I'm also have problems figuring out a particular puter problem for one client, and I've been obsessing over it. I can't stand it when I don't figure something out in a reasonable period of time.
It could also be that I spend 90% of my "free" time during work at home, as opposed to the office. I use that time to study, update and/or organize my laptop, tinker with the home firewall, play video games. I think I'll start spending more free time at the office, maybe that will make me "feel" more productive.
Holy crap, who really cares to read this crap? hah. I'll think of something more interesting for next time. |

so i guess i'll make a real post now.
i got to thinking about friendships last night. i've never had a lot of friends, just a few close ones. i was thinking about old close friends, that arn't really that close anymore. some arn't even my friends anymore.
isn't is strange how friends just drift apart. it's not like an intimate relationship. even if an intimate relationship takes a while to break apart, the break is usually cleaner than with a friendship. in my experience, a degrading friendship is like a slow undiagnosed cancer. things just slowly fall apart and you don't really notice it. then one day you realize that part of your life is dead. it's really quite depressing. i think that intimate breakups are better because it's just like, well, breaking your arm. you break it, it hurts for a while, and usually heals pretty quickly(supposing you don't keep breaking the damn thing before it's healed).
i find that the relationships and experiences that i really miss are not those with old lovers, but with old friends. |
